Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics(formerly Beijing Institute of Aeronautics)or Beihang University (spelled in Chinese for short)was founded on October 25, 1952, originated from the merger of the aeronautical departments of Tsinghua University, Beiyang University, Amoy University, Sichuan University, Yunnan University, etc. Being located in the center of the Zhongguancun Science Park, next to the National Olympic Center, with an area of 1km×1km, Beihang is the first university in China focusing on aeronautical and astronautical education and research. The university’s second campus, named Shahe, also 1km×1km, is 20km away from the main campus.
Since its founding, Beihang has excelled as one of the 16 key state universities in China, given priority for development. At the beginning of the new millennium, Beihang was officially listed in the China’s Action Plan for the Revitalization of Education in the 21st Century (‘211’plan for short) and the Plan for Achieving the World-Class Universities(‘985’plan for short). Over the past 63 years, Beihang has fostered more than 170,000 professionals in various disciplines for the country. The main designers and chief engineers of the recently successfully launched China’s first manned space flight, Shengzhou-5 Spacecraft, are proudly the Beihang alumni. The university and its alumni have contributed the most and the biggest to the country’s aeronautical, astronautical and other industries. At present, the university comprises 28 schools/colleges, covering such disciplines as science, technology, liberal arts, law, economy, management, philosophy, foreign languages and education. The number of faculty staff in total is 2,366, including 20 academicians of either the Chinese Academy of Sciences or the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1,452 full or associate professors.
Beihang has now a total enrolment of over 29,951 full-time students, including 4,305 doctorate candidates, 9,113 master candidates and 1,067 international students. In addition, there are more than 10,000 part-time graduate students studying for their professional degrees.It has more than 60 research institutes or interdisciplinary research centers and 170 professional laboratories(including 10 national key laboratories, 4 national engineering centers and 58 provincial or ministry-level key laboratories). Beihang has become one of the China’s important bases for scientific/technological innovation and high-level personnel education.
Beihang has evolved into an open, comprehensive, research-oriented university with focuses on aeronautics, astronautics and informatics.
At present, the president of Beihang is Professor XU Hui-bin(a material scientist, and the academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering).
