The International Research Institute for Multidisciplinary Science (IRI)

IRI

The IRI, since its inauguration, has pursued the international cutting-edge research. At IRI, the pursuit of knowledge and innovation are the driving power for advancement. In a period of only one year, IRI has attracted a large culturally diverse group of outstanding internationally recognized academic talents. New cutting edge interdisciplinary research directionsare emerging at IRI and are leading several initiatives at Beihang and further expanding Beihang’s reputation for science and engineering leadership.

1. Development of Science and Engineering Thrusts and Talent Teams

Premised on rapid advancement of the first five IRI research centers established in 2013, IRI has subsequently established three additional centers:

1. Center for Soft Matter Physics and Its Applications. This center is directed by Masao Doi, an internationally-recognized scholar in the field of soft matter research, and an expert selected through the Recruitment Program of Global Experts.

2. Spintronics Interdisciplinary Center, directed by Professor Zhao Weisheng, a previous tenured researcher of the French Academy of Sciences and a scholar recruited through the Recruitment Program of Global Youth Experts.

3.HEEGER Beijing Research and Development Center, directed by Professor Alan Heeger, a winner of Nobel Price.

Over the past year, the IRC has recruited one expert from the Recruitment Program of Global Experts, one Yangtze River Scholar, three finalists from the Recruitment Program of Global Youth Experts, and 17 finalists from the Zhuoyue program. In total, by the end of 2013, the IRC has harbored 6 experts from the The Recruitment Program of Global Experts, one from the Yangtze River Scholar, 4 finalists from the Recruitment Program of Global Youth Experts, and 36 finalists from the Zhuoyue Program. These scholars are from the top-tier universities including Harvard University, Stanford University and Imperial College London. Through this recruitment, the international recognition of the university is further enhanced, and the influence of the university is rapidly expanding in the international research and education fields, which will lead to the attraction of additional international scholars.

2. Scientific Research and International Cooperation

The IRI aims to create a top international academic platform. IRC carries the mission of conducting internationally cutting-edge academic research. IRI will prioritize the elements of international research standardsand forward thinking scholarly as the keystone of its academic research matrix.

Standing in line with the universal rules of international assessment, the academic strength of the talent team is primarily measured by the quality of the research publications it produces. In 2013, IRI scholars have published 84 SCI academic papers. Among these publications, the most outstanding ones are the Energetic electron acceleration by unsteady magnetic reconnection published in Nature Physics by Fu Huishan; the Study of e+e−→π+π−J/ψ and Observation of a Charged CharmoniumlikeState at Belle, published in Phsy.Rev.Lett by Professor ShenChengping, a paper atop the list of theeleven achievementsin the field of physics identified by the American Physics Magazine in 2013. Prof. Watanabe Hiroshi has also published one paper in Phys.Rev.Lett. There werea total of 93 scholars from IRI who either organized or attended international academic conferences in 2013, accounting for nearly a quarter of the total number of conference attendees in the university. Accordingly, the position of the IRI as an international academic zone is rapidly emerging, and IRI has become a cornerstone of Beihangas it further establishes itself as a leading world-class university.

3. GOALS

In 2014, Beihang will center around the theme of “internationalization” as it further strengthens its position along the path of other world-class universities. Beihang will further its international leadership and standing through expansion of IRI coupled with a vision of “strategic research thinking and education”. Building upon its rapid expansion and success, IRI will stand in the international academic frontier and serve as the multi-disciplinary lead within the university. IRI scholars will be Beihang’s “eyes and ears” in the global academic community and identify key research fields and key research directions for the promotion of international multidisciplinary sciences. At Beihang, IRI will help foster an academic system and development model in line with the trend of international development at BUAA. The IRC will strive to promote innovation, using the research centers as bridges, and maximizing its advantage of international exchange of oversea talents, to achieve far-reaching interaction between recruited overseas talents and the campus culture. Based on the international knowledge sharing and trans-disciplinary cooperation, IRI will continue to produce high-level scientific research and strive to generate an increasing number of academic works with far-reaching originality, innovation and international influence. The IRI wishes to represent the academic strength of Beihang and promote the international impact of academic research and education at Beihang.
