Release time:September 10, 2018

Topic:Durability and Damage Tolerance Performance of Additive Manufactured Ti-6Al-4V

Speaker:Prof. Zhang Xiang, Coventry University, United Kingdom

Time:September 11, at 14:30

Venue:C708, New Main Building

Abstract:

In this talk, the durability and damage tolerance aspects of additive manufactured titanium alloys will be discussed. Prospects of using the new manufacturing method for the aerospace applications, achievements, and also challenges, in the modelling and characterisation of such materials will be discussed, with a focus on the fatigue and fracture properties. Examples of our recent work on Ti-6Al-4V built by the Wire + Arc Additive Manufacture process will be presented. Finally, some thoughts will be shared with the audience on future needs, developments and prospects for qualification and certification of new 3D printed materials.

Biography of the Speaker:

Professor Zhang Xiang’s career started in 1981 at the Aircraft Strength Research Institute in Xi’an after graduating from the Northwestern Polytechnical University in aircraft structures. She obtained her PhD in 1991 at the Imperial College London and continued as a Research Associate until 1997. This was followed by Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, and Readership positions at Cranfield University (1997-2014). She joined Coventry University in 2015 to lead the structural integrity research team. She is Visiting Professor to Northwestern Polytechnical University since 2009.

Her professional qualifications include Fellow of Royal Aeronautical Society, Senior Member of American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Fellow of UK’s High Education Academy, and Charted Engineer. She is a Council member of the Forum for Engineering Structural Integrity (FESI), member of Royal Aeronautical Society’s Structures and Materials Specialist Group, and editorial board members of international journals.

Prof. Zhang has conducted research for new and advanced materials made by innovative manufacturing processes; including z-fibre reinforce composites, welded and additive manufactured aerospace alloys. She has published over 180 papers. She has led projects in collaboration with Airbus, Alcoa, BP, TWI, Lloyd’s Register Foundation, and with Beihang and NPU in China. She received the Helmholtz International Fellow Award in 2016.
