Abstract:
The world’s ageing population results in escalating healthcare costs and social-economical burden. In response, many parties have developed telehealth systems as solutions for elderly care. The conventionally monitored physiologic signals include electrocardiogram, photoplethysmogram, blood pressure, body temperature and movement. However, these systems usually require considerable user intervention and specialized sensors attached to the body. At the same time, there is continual search for innovative measurement methods and alternative physiological parameters to provide better accessibility and deeper understanding of the patients’ health. This talk first gives an overview of the development of telehealth, then discusses the future trends of wearable technologies for diagnostics and prognostics of health. Related research in modeling of physiological and biomechanical systems will also be presented.
Biography of the Speaker：
Dr. Kevin Hung received his B.Sc. from Queen’s University, Canada, and his M.Phil. and Ph.D. from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is currently Assistant Professor and Programme Leader of Electronic and Computer Engineering at the School of Science and Technology, The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK). He has been the principal investigator of several school and government-funded projects on mobile health and telehealth. Before joining OUHK, Dr. Hung had been project manager at a biomedical engineering research center, coordinating commercialization of innovative medical products; and engineer at a medical device company, where he focused on development of respiratory diagnostic devices and IP management. Dr. Hung is the co-authors of 5 books in telehealth area. He is a founding officer of the IEEE-EMBS Hong Kong Chapter, Vice-Chair of the Electronics and Communications Section of IET Hong Kong, and founding Counsellor of the IEEE OUHK Student Branch. Dr. Hung’s research interests include mobile health, eye-tracking, ocular informatics, wearable sensors, biosystem modelling, and engineering education.
