The More Electric Aircraft

Abstract:

This talk will be specific to more electric aircraft technologies. It will cover the current research trends, give examples of ongoing projects and the key future challenges to enable an increased aircraft electrification. Examples of projects related to primary and secondary actuation systems, generation, taxiing, modelling and fault management will be presented. Focus will be on electrical drives including the design of electrical machines and power electronics to reach very high torque and power densities as well a high reliability and availability through fault tolerance.

Introduction of Speaker:

Prof. Christopher Gerada obtained his PhD researching high performance motor drives from the University of Nottingham, UK in 2005. He subsequently managed and worked within the GE Aviation University Technology Centre on the design and modelling of electromagnetic actuators for aerospace applications. He was appointed as Lecturer in Electrical Machines in 2008, Associate Professor in 2011 and Full Professor in 2013. His core research interests include the design and modelling of high performance electric drives and machines for transport and power generation. He holds a Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Electrical Machines, has published over 130 international papers and led numerous international projects with both industry and academia.

Professor Gerada is currently the Chair of the IEEE IES Electrical Machines Technical Committee and an Associate Editor for the IEEE IAS Transactions.
