Beijing Air and Space Museum
Beijing Air and Space Museum is China’s first comprehensive aerospace science and technology museum open to the public. Covering about 8,300 square meters of floor space, its exhibition area consists of four parts: Pursuit of Dreams in the Sky, Soaring Silver Eagles, Shenzhou Space Exploration, and Aerospace Corridor. The museum is home to over 300 precious aerospace relics and real structures, engines and equipment from aircraft and spacecraft, and it adopts high-tech methods to illustrate aeronautic and astronautic principles and the history of human exploration of the sky and space.
The museum has multiple functions, including teaching, popularization of science, and cultural heritage. For example, it is where Beihang teachers and students have practice classes for courses like Introduction to Aeronautics and Astronautics, Aero Engines, Aircraft Structure, Landing Gear Structure, Missile Structure, Spacecraft Design, etc. As a key part of the national demonstration center for experiment teaching of aeronautics and astronautics, the museum is also an important base for the popularization of aerospace knowledge and culture, the spread of Beihang spirit, and patriotism and national defense education among teenagers.
Beijing Air and Space Museum was built on the basis of Beijing Aviation Museum founded in 1985 by extending the original aircraft structure showroom and the hangar. After almost four years of construction and expansion of the collection, it changed to its current name and reopened to the public on the 60th birthday of Beihang in 2012.

Pursuit of Dreams in the Sky

This exhibition area is designed to show Beihang’s top research level to the public through exhibits of aeronautic designs, aero engines and avionics. The area takes the shape of a complete plane, and the inside of a plane’s nose, cabin and fuselage is shown in the corresponding parts of this “plane”. The floor is decorated with stripes to provide a sense of speed.

This area has many precious exhibits, such as dissected fuselages, wings, landing gear, engines, airborne equipment and so on. It combines real objects with dynamic demonstrations and serves as an important teaching base for core courses related to aircraft design.

Soaring Silver Eagles

This exhibition area has two parts: Beihang Planes and Exhibition of Real Planes.

As the core of this area, the Beihang Planes section is aimed at illustrating the great contributions made by Beihang to China’s aviation cause. Situated at the entrance of this exhibition area, this section presents a collection of real planes designed and made by Beihang, such as Beijing 1, a light passenger airliner developed by Beihang faculty and students in 1958.

Other real planes on display in this area include the Northrop P-61 Black Widow, the Harrier, etc. Different parts of this area feature different space design, forming a changing continuum that represents the development of aircraft.
