Scientific writing and academic publication in English is important for both academics and students in their academic career. However, it may be difficult for young academics and students to write high-quality reports and scientific papers in English because of the lack of experience. This seminar is based on the speaker’s 30 year academic experience in the UK and his professional experience involving in journals, such as IEEE Trans. IM, IEEE Sensors J. and Meas. Sci. Technol., and organising international conferences. The following three topics will be discussed: (1) details in writing scientific papers, including structure, English language, and reference format, (2) publishing journal papers, including how to choose a journal, what are the impact factor and H-index, and a reviewing process, and (3) some issues on presentation in English at international conferences. This is an opportunity for young academics and students to gain knowledge in the above aspects, which may not be available elsewhere.

Wuqiang Yang graduated from Tsinghua University. Since 1991, he has been working with UMIST and The University of Manchester in the UK. He became Professor of Electronic Instrumentation in the Dept. of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 2005. His main research interests include industrial tomography, especially electrical capacitance tomography (ECT), sensing and data acquisition systems, circuit design, image reconstruction algorithms, instrumentation and multiphase flow measurement. He has published 500 papers. He is a referee for over 50 journals, Associate Editor of IEEE Trans. IM, editorial board member of 6 other journals (including Meas. Sci. Technol.), guest editor of many journal special issues and visiting professor at several other universities. He edited a book “Sensor Array”, published by InTech. Currently, he is editing a book “Imaging Sensors” to be published by IET. He was an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer from 2010 to 2016, Vice Chair of 2017 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference, and one of key organisers of IEEE International Conference on Imaging System and Techniques for many years. His biography has been included in Who’s Who in the World since 2002.
