Abstract:

Wire and arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is started to be widely accepted by industry. However, microstructural control during arc-based additive manufacturing can be detrimental for full adoption industrially. In this talk, we will elucidate different WAAM variants capable to control the microstructure of the fabricated parts. The presentation will start with by showcasing the recently developed hot forging WAAM and then move on to the introduction of inoculants in the melt pool. Aside from these technological developments, microstructure characterization encompassing electron microscopy and high energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction will be shown to evidence the impact of the different WAAM variants and to establish microstructure/properties relationships.

About the Speaker:

Prof. João Pedro Oliveira’s research primarily focuses on the areas of addictive manufacturing and wielding. He has a special interest in non-conventional metallic materials such as shape memory alloys and high entropy alloys. His group is an intensive user of high energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction for both in-situ and ex-situ studies to unveil microstructure relationships in a wide range of engineering materials. João has published many papers, with an h-index of 33. He is currently Associate Editor of Additive Manufacturing and is a member of the editorial board of Materials & Design.
