Wire and arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is started to be widely accepted by industry. However, microstructural control during arc-based additive manufacturing can be detrimental for full adoption industrially. In this talk, we will elucidate different WAAM variants capable to control the microstructure of the fabricated parts. The presentation will start with by showcasing the recently developed hot forging WAAM and then move on to the introduction of inoculants in the melt pool. Aside from these technological developments, microstructure characterization encompassing electron microscopy and high energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction will be shown to evidence the impact of the different WAAM variants and to establish microstructure/properties relationships.
About the Speaker:
Prof. João Pedro Oliveira’s research is focused on the welding and additive manufacturing of advanced engineering materials, especially on the exploration of unconventional engineering alloys such as shape memory alloys and high-entropy alloys. Besides, his research team has conducted intensive research in the area of ex-situ or in-situ fine detection of material microstructures via high energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Prof. João Pedro Oliveira has published many papers with an h-index of 33. He is currently an associate editor of Additive Manufacturing and an editorial board member of Materials & Design.
