Du Shanyi (1938.8—) is a professor and PhD supervisor in the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Beihang University, a member of Chinese Academy of Engineering (elected in 1999), a senior technical advisor of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, and a professor of Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT).
In 1964, he graduated from the Department of Modern Mechanics of the University of Science and Technology of China and began to work at HIT. From 1980 to 1982, he was a visiting scholar at the George Washington University, USA. Besides HIT and Beihang, he is also a part-time professor at Tsinghua University, Peking University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Xi'an Jiaotong University.
Prof. Du’s research interests lie in mechanics, composite materials and astronautical engineering. His major achievements include finding the solution to several key theoretical and technical problems in thermal protection materials and structures, extension of mesomechanics to the mechanical analysis of advanced composite materials, development of random inclusion theory and research on intelligent composite materials and structures.
He won a second prize and a third prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, two second prizes of the State Technological Invention Award, five provincial or ministry-level first prizes, the Ho Leung Ho Lee Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress and so on. He has published over 200 papers and 10 monographs, such as Mesomechanics of Composite Materials and Intelligent Material Systems and Structures.
