5G+ Smart Education Summit of World 5G Convention 2019 Held

The 5G+ Smart Education Summit of the World 5G Convention 2019 was held at Beijing Etrong International Exhibition and Convention Center on the morning of November 22. It was co-organized by Beihang University and the China Association of Higher Education, and Cao Shumin, Secretary of the Party Committee of Beihang University, took the chair.

As an important component of the first World 5G Convention, the 5G+ Smart Education Summit centered around the theme of the convention, “5G Changes the World, 5G Creates the Future”, and aimed to be a top platform for cooperation and discussions about the reforms and innovations resulted from 5G-powered smart education and the future actions supposed to be taken in relevant fields. The convention was co-hosted by the People's Government of Beijing Municipality, National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in Beijing from November 20 to 23.

The summit attracted leaders and experts from the Government, universities, enterprises and the industry, including the Ministry of Education, the China Association of Higher Education, the High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China (RDFZ), Headquarters of RDFZ United Schools, China Mobile Limited, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT), the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), Beijing Normal University, the University of Bern, SWITCH foundation, the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), etc.

In her welcome address, Secretary Cao described 5G, the next generation of mobile communication, as “legendary” and “magical”. She pointed out that its unprecedented performance and connectivity made it the key engine to promote digitization, establish network and bring intelligence in various fields. She also underlined that those embracing new revolutionary technologies first would win the opportunities for development.

Specifically, Secretary Cao believed that 5G would influence education comprehensively and thoroughly and noted the important role played by 5G in real-time high-resolution distance learning classroom, intelligent classroom, textbooks and campus, promotion of fairness in education, progress in cooperation and integration of different disciplines, etc. Stressing the need for a concerted effort made by educators and the industry in 5G+ smart education, she sincerely hoped that the summit could serve as a top platform for cooperation and exchanges, where the participants could explore the innovative development of 5G+ smart education together and contribute to the advances of education modernization and China’s development into an educational powerhouse.

Tan Qinliang, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Science and Technology of the Ministry of Education, regarded the 5G network as the infrastructure of the new generation of internet industry and the key support for the integrated development of the Internet of everything, information technology and the real economy. According to him, to promote the development of smart education with 5G, we must put people first, adhere to the methods of integrated innovation and systematic progress, seize the development opportunity brought by 5G and plan ahead together so as to build China into an educational powerhouse with better quality and higher extent of informatization, efficiency, fairness and sustainability and to devote more to the realization of the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation.

In his keynote speech titled “Embrace 5G to Power Progress in Higher Education”, Du Yubo, President of the China Association of Higher Education, former Vice Secretary of the Party Organization of the Ministry of Education and former Vice Minister of Education, defined the goal of the summit as promotion of the modernization of the governance capabilities and system of higher education to build China into a powerhouse of higher education under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era.

Mr. Du emphasized four points: the deep understanding of the trend in higher education development, the in-depth knowledge of the profound changes of higher education in the 5G era, the opportunities for the innovative development of higher education, and the modernization of the governance capabilities and system of higher education. He considered any science or technology as a double-edged sword and proposed that we must reasonably utilize 5G technology to benefit human society and power the reform and development of higher education. Meanwhile, we must also establish a sound system of laws and regulations to protect the development of 5G technology and contribute to advances in higher education.

As a former counsellor of the Counsellors' Office of the State Council, a member of National Education Advisory Committee and Honorary President of RDFZ and Headquarters of RDFZ United Schools, Liu Pengzhi introduced in her keynote speech “To Lead, Innovate and Achieve Fairness: Missions of Education in 5G Era” the efforts made by RDFZ in basic education from the aspects of modern education, technology, informatized functions and so on since it started distance education in 1998. She provided an example of a 5G and holography-based lesson simultaneously taught by a Beihang professor in three places on November 12, 2019. According to her, as the integration of information technology and education provided a new model for future education, everyone should work together for the future of smart education and the realization of the Two Centenary Goals.

Starting from the theme of the World 5G Convention 2019 and the practice of China Mobile Limited, Zhao Dachun, Vice President of the company, shared his thoughts and explorations of how 5G could enhance the digitization of education in his keynote speech “Go Ahead with ‘5G+’ Plan to Power Digitization Reform of Education”, discussing the role of 5G in upgrading infrastructure, speeding the reform of teaching mode, facilitating integration and innovation of different industries, bringing new facilities, applications and ecology, etc.

By interpreting examples from research projects, Torsten Braun, Managing Director of the Institute of Computer Science of the University of Bern and Vice President of SWITCH foundation, underlined the importance of virtual reality and augmented reality to education development and mentioned how well-tailored teaching can influence students in a report titled “5G Edge Computing to Support Education Services”. According to him, technologies like mobile edge computing (MEC) could be fully developed to ensure reliable and high-speed information transmission, which would promote the development of smart education.

Delivering a report titled “5G Development Power Education Reforms”, Wang Wenbo, Vice President of BUPT, elaborated on the profound influences of 5G+ artificial intelligence (AI) on future education from three aspects: the development needs of 5G+ smart education, personalized and independent study enabled by 5G, and smart management and innovation made possible by 5G, big data, AI and other methods.

In his report titled “5G-Powered Reconstruction of Learning Environment and Balanced Development of Education”, Huang Ronghuai, Director of the National Engineering Laboratory for Cyberlearning and Intelligent Technology of Beijing Normal University, brought up six suggestions on large-scale 5G application: the exploration of 5G applications to suit students’ needs for diversified learning styles, the development of 5G test environment to provide education and teaching with real support, the research into 5G integration technology and establishment of labs with universities, the deployment of 5G infrastructure to equip every school with quality broadband network, the development of public platform to promote the innovation of industrial activities in Smart Education Demonstration Zone, and the spread of 5G knowledge as well as a particular focus on the development of education in rural areas.

Using AI as an example, Tony Quek, Acting Head of Information Systems Technology and Design Pillar of SUTD, talked about the theoretical development of educational technology innovation by tracing back to the source and looking ahead to the future of technological development in his report titled “Shannon Meets Wiener for 5G & Beyond”. He also pointed out the need for the active participation from universities in theoretical innovation to enhance technological development.

Hu Jianbo, Chief Engineer of CAICT gave a report titled “Development of 5G Industry in Digital Economy”. He considered platform, ecology and digitization as the remarkable features of 5G industry and hoped that 5G technology could be integrated with various industries in our exploration of future applications.

During the salon of the summit, the guests fully discussed issues like the changes and opportunities brought by smart education in the era of 5G and the ecology of 5G+ smart education.

Beihang University has been a pioneer in 5G+ smart education through multilateral cooperation with relevant institutions and operators in terms of research, teaching, talent cultivation and so on.

In the exhibition area of 5G+ smart education, the 5G lab, one of whose developers was Behang University, showed real-time experiment, teaching activities and 5G live streaming. The National Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Aerospace Electronic Information of Beihang University built a 5G environment and relevant research and teaching platform, which enabled 5G-based remote online experiment, live interactive teaching, student scientific and technological innovation, experiment in class, etc. The 5G+ UAV-based remote command, monitoring and image transmission platform set up by Hangzhou Innovation Institute of Beihang University could make 5G-based live virtual reality panorama streaming, 4K live streaming and remote UAV control a reality, demonstrating the applications of 5G in outdoor field teaching.

Furthermore, a professor of Beihang University taught a lesson named “Interpret the Language of the Human Brain” simultaneously to the students from RDFZ and Xingguo Middle School in Jiangxi Province by applying 5G technology and holography. The lesson helped the students fully understand and memorize the knowledge of brain-computer interface on the spot, breaking the traditional pattern of education concerning cutting-edge technology and offering a 5G-based innovative way to improve the imbalanced distribution of educational resources.
