Nobody (Chinese title: Láng Láng Shān Xiāo Yáo Guài), an animated feature film directed by Associate Professor Yu Shui from the School of New Media Art and Design at Beihang University, premiered nationwide on August 2.

Produced by Shanghai Animation Film Studio, the movie is the first feature-length spin-off of the acclaimed anthology Yao-Chinese Folktales and marks China’s first 2D animated movie released in IMAX, following four years of production.
The film follows four underdog monsters in Langlang Mountain who, after angering their overlord, are forced to impersonate the legendary Journey to the West pilgrims in a riotous fake pilgrimage. The ragtag team, each with distinct personalities, stumbles into becoming “grassroots heroes.” Beneath the humor lies a poignant allegory for modern youth’s struggles with societal pressures and self-discovery, resonating deeply with audiences.
The film masterfully blends traditional Chinese ink-wash aesthetics with modern animation techniques, creating a uniquely layered cinematic experience that celebrates Chinese cultural heritage.

As both director and screenwriter, Yu brings an illustrious career to this production. He has helmed numerous celebrated works, which have been recognized with over 40 prestigious awards, including the 17th Five-One Project Award by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, the Golden Prize at the 19th China International Cartoon & Animation Festival, and the Best Innovation Award at the Hannover International Film Festival.
Yu's commitment to integrating professional creative practice with academic instruction has cultivated exceptional talent for the industry. Notably, seven Beihang alumni served as core creative team members on this production.
The successful release of Nobody exemplifies Beihang University's commitment to excellence in humanities and arts, marking another significant stride toward its vision of becoming a world-class university with Chinese characteristics.
