Students from Beihang University achieved outstanding results in the recently concluded national final of the "FLTRP·ETIC Cup" "Understanding Contemporary China" (UCC) National Foreign Language Contest for College Students, held in Beijing.
Organized by the Department of Russian Studies of the School of Foreign Languages at Beihang University and under the guidance of instructors including Ge Yanlei, the university's participants delivered a remarkable performance in the multilingual group. Graduate students Wu Junying and Yang Yongqi secured provincial gold awards, while Wen Yiping and Zhang Shuo earned provincial silver awards. Wu Junying demonstrated exceptional skill throughout the competition, advancing through university, provincial, and national rounds to ultimately claim a national silver award in the final.
This year's contest attracted 4,452 participants from over 600 universities across China, competing in languages including Russian, German, French, Spanish, Arabic, Japanese, Italian, Portuguese, and Korean. In the Russian category, only gold medalists from each province or municipality—81 nationwide—qualified for the national competition. From there, the top 30 performers in the first national round advanced to the final stage.
The contest comprehensively assessed participants' language proficiency through modules in reading, writing, translation (both written and oral), prepared speech, and impromptu speaking. Topics centered on significant contemporary themes such as "Youth Innovation," "Digitalization in Education," and "A Community with a Shared Future for Mankind," challenging contestants to articulate China's perspectives, wisdom, and solutions, thereby connecting their personal aspirations with national development goals.
The remarkable achievements of Beihang students underscore the effectiveness of the university's foreign language talent development. The Department of Russian Studies, which has consistently achieved excellence in teaching, research, and competitions in recent years, remains committed to cultivating versatile professionals who possess a strong sense of national identity, a global outlook, and superior expertise in Russian studies.
