On the evening of March 18, the acclaimed Russian pianist and composer Alexey Chernov delivered a breathtaking solo recital at the Yongman Theater on Beihang University's Shahe Campus, attracting over 500 students and faculty members.

The concert, titled "A Night with the Maestro," offered a captivating journey through over two and a half centuries of music, weaving together six masterpieces that spanned from the refined elegance of the Viennese Classicists to the epic narratives of contemporary Hollywood cinema.
The recital commenced with the crystalline grace of Mozart's Sonata in C major, followed by the dramatic evolution of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 in C-Sharp Minor, Op. 27 No. 2—"Moonlight". The performance transitioned seamlessly from its meditative opening to a tempestuous conclusion, offering a powerful and immersive listening experience. As the evening unfolded, the keyboard came alive under Chernov's fingers, weaving a dialogue across time through pieces like Valentin Silvestrov's Three Pieces, Rachmaninoff's Études-Tableaux, and Chernov's own arrangement of Rachmaninoff's Vocalise.
The concert reached its climax with a thrilling performance of his own Fantasy on Themes from "The Lord of the Rings". Modern harmonies intertwined with beloved cinematic melodies to create a sweeping musical narrative. As the final chord faded into the silence of the hall, the audience held its breath for a moment before erupting into thunderous applause.
“This performance was incredibly powerful,” said Huang Jingying, a 2024 undergraduate from the School of Chemistry who attended the recital. "Even though I have no background in piano, I could still feel the magic flowing from the keys. Chernov didn't just showcase the unique charm of classical music through different styles; in his own arrangements, he blended the original rhythms with his own interpretations, giving us a true artistic feast. I felt my emotions rise and fall with the music, and I truly experienced its power to move the soul."

The evening was a testament to Alexey Chernov's dual genius as both a performer and a composer. He demonstrated a profound understanding of classical masterpieces while fearlessly exploring the frontiers of contemporary music. This high-profile cultural event aligns with Beihang University's commitment to holistic education, using the power of fine arts to enrich the cultural and spiritual life of the campus community, enhance aesthetic sensibilities, and foster a vibrant and diverse artistic atmosphere.

Alexey Chernov is a Russian pianist celebrated for his profound interpretations and technical mastery. He recently garnered widespread acclaim from both critics and classical music enthusiasts for his complete cycle of Scriabin's piano works at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Beijing, a feat hailed as a "perfect musical marathon." During his studies at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory, he received numerous scholarships and honors, and has claimed top prizes at competitions including the Scriabin International Piano Competition. In 2022, commemorating the 150th anniversary of Scriabin's birth, he made history by becoming the first pianist to perform the composer's complete piano oeuvre in a single day across seven concerts at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory and the Alexander Scriabin Memorial Museum.
