Advanced Solar Energy Technologies Beyond 2020
Release time:November 6, 2018

Topic:Advanced Solar Energy Technologies Beyond 2020

Speaker: Prof. Gregory J. Wilson

Time:10:00 AM, November 8

Venue:Room 513, Academic Exchange Hall, School of Physics and Nuclear Energy Engineering

Abstract:

In this talk I will provide an overview of CSIRO and the broad research interests of the CSIRO Energy Business Unit and our role in achieving reduced emissions and the better use of energy resources. I will further give some insight into the broader research and interests of the Solar Energy Technologies Group and our National Solar Energy Centre (NSEC) in Newcastle where we conduct world class research and development in solar processes, components, photovoltaics and renewable energy integration. Through the Group I lead we have projects and priorities which focus on research at NSEC and examine the technical, economic, environmental and transitional issues for uptake of new energy technologies.

In the talk I will provide a closer overview of our materials science research into next generation photovoltaics, which will focus on our Group’s research into perovskite semiconductors for thin-film PV. This includes materials optimisation through solution processed and physical vapour deposition fabrication routes and the passivation techniques employed to fabricate high-efficiency devices exceeding 20% light-to-electrical power-conversion efficiency (PCE). I will also outline one of our recent studies on development of guidelines for the measurement and assessment of this new class of solar cells based on perovskite semi-conductors, as undertaken in our accredited test cell facility, where we correlate materials and device performance as a research route to high-performance and stability of solar cell devices.

Biography of the Speaker:

Prof. Gregory J. Wilson is a Solar Energy Specialist with over 18 years research experience in materials for energy storage and conversion, he is Research Group Leader for Solar Energy Technologies and Principal Research Scientist for Next Generation Photovoltaics in CSIRO Energy. He was the 2010 Queensland University of Technology Faculty of Science and Technology, Outstanding Young Alumni of the Year and in 2015 was awarded the CSIRO Office of the Chief Executive Julius Career in Energy. Prof. Wilson is a Fellow Charted Chemist of the Royal Australian Chemical Society, a member of the Editorial Board for several journals in the solar energy and materials chemistry fields and is a regular peer reviewer in high impact international science journals.

As Research Group Leader for CSIRO Solar Energy Technologies he manages the largest solar research effort within CSIRO in the Energy Business Unit consisting of over 48 group members / 32 full-time engineers and scientists bringing together a multi-disciplinary research group of mechanical and software engineers, optical and device physicists, material and physical chemists, chemical process and electrical engineers. Prof. Wilson’s research and publications are primarily in materials science for thin-film photovoltaics, nanostructured materials, thin-films and coatings, and high-temperature solar materials in PV and CSP applications. Prof. Wilson is recognised internationally for materials research into thin-film photovoltaics, most notably mesoscopic solar cells including the dye-sensitised solar cell (DSSC) and Perovskite thin-film PV.
