Introduction to the Two-Phase Turbulent Combustion Simulation and Its Application
Release time:November 15, 2018

Topic: Introduction to the Two-Phase Turbulent Combustion Simulation and Its Application

Speaker: Professor William Jones, Imperial College London

Time: 10:00 AM, November 22

Venue: D419, New Main Building

Abstract:

The talk will give an introduction to LES,and the justification for its use. Combustion advanced sub-grid probability density function (PDF) evaluation equation will be adopted in conjunction with stochastic field solution method. The BOFFIN code, which is based on LES/PDF method, written specifically to gas turbine combustion chambers will be introduced. Example of an airflow through fuel injector and two-phase turbulent combustion flow in gas-turbine combustor will be discussed.

Biography of the Speaker:

William Jones is Professor of Combustion in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London. He completed his Ph.D. in Imperial College and successively became a researchfellow in the Technische Hochschule, Aachen, a section leader in the Combustion Department of Rolls-Royce Ltd and, from 1977, a member of the teaching faculty of Imperial College London.

Professor Jones has been active in Combustion and Turbulence research for over twenty-five years, and he has published extensively in the fields of turbulence, combustion modelling and CFD. The current activities of him and his co-workers include Combustion Large Eddy Simulation (LES), the development of PDF transport equation methods for turbulent combustion, the development of CFD tools for practical combustion systems and the modelling of turbulence. He is an active participant in the UK EPSRC consortia LESUK and COCCFEA.
