Abstract：Connected vehicle systems take advantage of wireless communications to enable vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I), and in general vehicle-to-anything (V2X) connectivity, resulting in a rich set of applications that promise to improve traffic safety, increase the efficiency of traffic flow, reduce congestion, and keep drivers and passengers informed and entertained. The WiNMoS Lab at UBC has been engaged in connected vehicle systems research for the past then years. This presentation will give an overview of connected vehicle systems and their specific characteristics that drive our research efforts. Specific research outcomes including intersection-aware ad hoc V2V routing, software platform for crowd-sourced vehicular social networks, and coordination of distributed software for edge-computing based V2X networks will be reviewed. The recently AURORA connected vehicle testbed that has recently been deployed around the UBC campus will be described. This presentation will also introduce the audience to the University of British Columbia, the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, and the WiNMoS Laboratory.
Biography of the Speaker：
Victor C. M. Leung is a Professor and the holder of the TELUS Mobility Research Chair in Advanced Telecommunications Engineering in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the University of British Columbia. His research interests are in the areas of wireless networks and mobile systems. He has co-authored more than 1,200 journal/conference papers and book chapters, and edited several books in these areas. Several of his papers have been selected for best paper awards.
Dr. Leung is a registered professional engineer in the Province of British Columbia, Canada. He is a Fellow of IEEE, the Royal Society of Canada, the Engineering Institute of Canada, and the Canadian Academy of Engineering. He was a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Communications Society. He has served/is serving on the editorial boards of the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications – Wireless Communications Series and Series on Green Communications and Networking, the IEEE Transactions on Computers, Cloud Computing, Green Communications and Networking, Wireless Communications, and Vehicular Technology, IEEE Wireless Communications Letters, IEEE Network, Computer Communications, as well as several other journals. He has guest-edited many journal special issues, and served on the technical program committees and organizing committees of numerous international conferences. Dr. Leung received the IEEE Vancouver Section Centennial Award, the 2011 UBC Killam Research Prize, the 2017 Canadian Award for Telecommunications Research, and the 2018 IEEE TGCC Distinguished Technical Achievement Recognition Award. He co-authored papers that won the 2017 IEEE ComSoc Fred W. Ellersick Prize, the 2017 IEEE Systems Journal Best Paper Award, and the 2018 IEEE CSIM Best Journal Paper Award.
