Abstract:

In recent years, technological progresses observed in the areas of Electro Mechanical Systems, 3D printing and Functional Materials are merging to produce a real technological breakthrough that will deeply impact the future developments of adaptive structures and systems. One can now imagine full integration of hybrid systems consisting of adaptive materials, electronics, computing resources and power systems. The next generation of composite structures that one call "smart metacomposite", should take full advantage of these technological advances for optimizing their behaviors.

These new researches allow tailoring local material physical behavior for implementing new structural functional properties with regards to vibration and acoustic criteria, among others. In this sense, we can speak of "integrated distributed adaptive metacomposites” that merges with the notion of programmable material.

After a short introduction and state of the art, the presentation describes theoretical and numerical tools for designing adaptive metacomposite through the control of acoustic impedance. The concept of active acoustical skin is also introduced. Modeling aspects and optimizations tools are also carried out and validated by an experimental prototype. Based on the proposed concept, we will present new results concerning potential applications. An acoustic diode is also proposed and an experimentation characterization on a rectangular duct validates our approach.

Biography:

Manuel Collet received his doctoral degree in Acoustics from École Centrale de Lyon in 1996. He is a senior researcher with the French CNRS, and he is also associated with the Tribology and System Dynamics Laboratory (LTDS) of Ecole Centrale de Lyon. His current research interests focus on smart structures and active control, MEMS applications in structural active control and smart materials or metamaterials modeling for structural dynamics. He has published more than 100 papers in the journals and conferences of international repute, with a total of over 1,000 citations.
