Abstract:

Mechanics has long been used as an enabling tool for technological developments. The present talk is aimed to summarize some of the recent developments in using mechanics to address important problems encountered in health-related technologies. Selected topics include our recent work on mechanics guided design of adhesive epicardial patches for the treatment of myocardial infarction (heart attack), simulation-assisted discovery of membrane active nanomedicine and cytotoxicity of low dimensional nanomaterials.

About the Speaker:

Prof. Huajian Gao is a Member of National Academy of Engineering (NAE), a Member of National Academy of Sciences (NAS), a Memberof American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), a Member of German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, and a Foreign Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He is the Walter H. Annenberg University Professor at Brown University and Editor-in-Chief of Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids (JMPS). Prof. Gao has made many internationally important achievements in many aspects of solid mechanics, such as mechanics of thin films, nanomechanics, fracture mechanics, nano-biomechanics, and micro-scale plasticity mechanics. He is the recipient of the Rodney Hill Prize in Solid Mechanics from International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics in 2012, the William Prager Medal from Society of Engineering Science in 2015, and the Nadai Medal from American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 2015.
