Stay True to Original Aspiration—Beihang Moral Education and Talent Cultivation Awards 2018

On the afternoon of September 9, Beihang University held the ceremony for the 34th Teachers’ Day and the Beihang Moral Education and Talent Cultivation Awards 2018.

The ceremony was attended by Cao Shumin, Secretary of Party Committee of Beihang University, President Xu Huibin and other university leaders. There were also attendees representing the teachers who received the awards, the teachers and students of all the schools, and the university administrations.

Dating back to 2017, the Beihang Moral Education and Talent Cultivation Awards were the highest honor of talent cultivation at Beihang University, including Beihang Accomplishment Award for Moral Education and Talent Cultivation, Beihang Excellence Award for Moral Education and Talent Cultivation and Beihang Distinction Award for Moral Education and Talent Cultivation.

These awards are aimed at fueling teachers’ sense of mission in terms of developing virtues and cultivating talents, and the standards are teaching-oriented without focusing on the titles and awards a teacher received. 82.5% of the students and 92.8% of the teachers participated in this year’s selection, choosing those committed teachers loved by students and recognized by their colleagues.

On behalf of the award recipients, Prof. Yang Chao from the School of Aeronautical Science and Engineering, Prof. Liu Jinghua from the School of Mechanical Engineering and Automation and Prof. Wang Huiwen from the School of Economics and Management delivered acceptance speeches. They expressed the gratitude to the teachers and students for their trust and support, and they were determined to keep improving their teaching and research capabilities and to learn while teaching.

Secretary Cao and President Xu presented the Beihang Accomplishment Award for Moral Education and Talent Cultivation to Prof. Wen Chuanyuan. The centenarian is a founder of the School of Automation Science and Electrical Engineering and the discipline of Control Science as well as a pioneer in the field of drone in China. He was also the general designer and director of Beijng 5, China’s first drone. He has cultivated a batch of academic leaders, some of which have become academicians, and he donated his savings to establish the Yuyuan Postgraduate Award Fund of the School of Automation Science and Electrical Engineering.

Prof. Wen spoke at the ceremony in a resonant voice. He expected “sincerity, fraternity and coordinated development” of the university, saying that these attributes “should be preserved by Beihangers throughout their life”

Representing the university, Secretary Cao congratulated the award recipients on their achievements and expressed her best wishes for the industrious and dedicated educators of Beihang University on Teachers’ Day. She also voiced her opinions on building a team of highly-qualified teachers and carrying out the essential task of developing virtues and cultivating talents.

Beihang Student Art Troupe performed “The Master Teacher”, a song and dance, to celebrate the 100th birthday of Prof. Wen. “The Master Teacher” is a title referring to teachers who guide students in developing good character, conduct and taste

Established in 2017, the Beihang Accomplishment Award for Moral Education and Talent Cultivation is designed to cite a celebrated teacher who has cultivated talents for more than 30 years and has made major achievements and contributions in virtue development, talent cultivation, teaching research and reform, theoretical innovation and mode exploration. The prize money is one million yuan. The first winner of the award was Academician Gao Zhentong, a professor and PhD supervisor of the School of Aeronautical Science and Engineering.

The award continued into 2018, and the university established the Beihang Excellence Award for Moral Education and Talent Cultivation as well as Beihang Distinction Award for Moral Education and Talent Cultivation this year to emphasize the importance of talent cultivation.
