The golden autumn of 2018 witnesses another new start of dreams at Beihang. Before the new generation of Beihangers set sail, it may be helpful to take a glance at the ABCs of Beihang University.
Founded in 1952, Beihang University (Beihang for short), the first institution of higher education in aerospace in the People's Republic of China, originated from the merger of the departments of aeronautics of eight universities, including Tsinghua University, Peiyang University (now known as Peiyang University), Northwestern Institute of Engineering (now known as Northwestern Polytechnical University), Xiamen University and so on. It is now subordinate to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Its two campuses, Xueyuan Road Campus and Shahe Campus, cover over 2,000,000 square meters and the total floor area is over 1,700,000 square meters.
Since 2017, Beihang University has revolutionized and adjusted its majors to enroll and cultivate students according to their aptitude and interest in general disciplines. Based on the pilot experience, Beihang School was established to support freshmen and sophomores and strengthen the general education. Here, the university’s educational resources are pooled to manage the talent cultivation in general disciplines and the development of its subordinate colleges as a whole. Also, under a complete credit system, the school helps introduce the innovation of course supermarket, which means that teachers and courses offered to students come from all over the world.
Corresponding to the general disciplines, there are six subordinate colleges under Beihang School, including Shie College, Fengru College, Shijia College, Shoue College, Zhizhen College and Zhixing College. Enrolled in one of the colleges at first, students can choose a school according to their interest and understanding at the end of their freshman year and decide on a major provided by the chosen school when their sophomore year ends. Besides, if their interest changes, they can still change their major to suit their needs in the rest of college years.
With the basic knowledge in mind, it is time for the new members of the Beihang family to write their own stories. Hopefully their moments at Beihang will be the stars that guide them through darkness and give them the courage to brave the winds and waves in their future. Welcome to Beihang!
