About digital twin

As an important enabling technology for digital transformation and intelligent transformation, digital twin has been studied by scientific research institutions and scholars from more than 80 countries. During the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020) period, it has been applied in a wide range of fields, covering aerospace, smart manufacturing, industrial engineering, smart city, construction, healthcare, robotics, ship, vehicles, railway, agriculture, mining, energy and environment, etc. Therefore, digital twin technologies enjoy promising prospects and high demands in the future. With the joint efforts from enterprises, universities, research institutes and end-users, recent years have seen rapid development of the theories, technologies, tools, standards, products, organizations and industries which take digital twin as the core. Statistics show that by now there have been more than 40,000 academic articles related to digital twin published.

Development of digital twin at Beihang University

Beihang University is one of the first universities in the world to start research on digital twin. Academician Zhao Qinping took a lead in proposing the development of digital twin interconnection networks in order to give support to the connectivity of in-depth application of virtual reality in physical industries.

The Digital Twin Research Group at Beihang led by Prof. Tao Fei first proposed the concept of Digital Twin Shop-floor (DTS) and published the first paper about DTS in 2016, which has drawn much attention of scholars in this field and has been cited and studied by more than 100 universities at home and abroad. This concept attached great significance in China’s scientific and research development.

To promote further development and industrial application of digital twin, in 2018, the Group proposed a novel five-dimensional digital twin model which has been applied in 10 fields. Furthermore, the systems of technologies, tools and standards of digital twin were also established by the Group together with other institutes and enterprises.

The digital twin research at Beihang has brought positive impact on relevant researches both at home and abroad. The Group has published two English academic monographs in Elsevier journals and one article in Nature, and was invited to deliver academic reports in many countries.

To foster the research and development of digital twin in China, the Group initiated the first academic conference on digital twin together with 12 universities in 2017. Since then, the conference has been successfully organized annually for four years. The 5th conference will be held in Shanghai, China.
