Release time:June 17, 2024 / Yao Zipeng

On the morning of June 10, Simon Marginson, professor of Higher Education at the University of Oxford, founding director of the Centre for Global Higher Education (CGHE) and co-editor of Higher Education, delivered an academic lecture with the theme of “Creating New Knowledge for the World: Globalization and Endogenization of Science.” The lecture was moderated by Lyu Ying from the Institute of Higher Education.

Professor Marginson is a leading global scholar in the field of higher education, and Fellow of the British Academy, the British Academy of Social Sciences, the European Academy of Sciences, and the Australian Academy of Social Sciences. His research interests include global and international higher education, higher education in East Asia, the public and social contribution of higher education, and higher education and social equality. In this lecture, Professor Marginson focused on global and national science trends and their implications, exploring the characteristics of globalized knowledge, the rise of Chinese and other non-Western knowledge systems, and the critical role of science in solving common problems facing humanity.

Professor Marginson noted that the global scientific system is made up of collaborative networks among scientists and the scientific output they produce, forming a publicly accessible knowledge base. Global science is rapidly growing and multipolar, however, it also faces cultural problems of occidentalism and neocolonialism. Professor Marginson further explored the distribution of power in global science, highlighting internal and external exclusion in the global scientific system and calling on the scientific community to promote diversity and decolonization of science. He concluded his lecture with several key steps towards a truly global science system, including promoting multilingual publishing, opening access to resources, maintaining scientific autonomy, and encouraging scientists to collaborate within domestic and international systems.

Zhao Shikui, director of the Institute of Higher Education, presented Professor Marginson with a certificate and had an in-depth discussion with him on future cooperation.

During the exchange session, the participating teachers and students had in-depth discussions with Professor Marginson on international university rankings, the characteristics of world-class universities, and transnational cooperation among scientists.

After the lecture, Wang Qiquan, secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Public Administration, met with Professor Marginson.
