Release time:July 29, 2024 / Lu Meili

On July 20, the 9th International UAV Grand Prix - Luancheng Cup International Unmanned System Swarm Technology Competition (IUSC) - Collective Intelligence 2024 was convened at Beihang University.

Lin Zuoming, director of the organizing committee of the competition and chairman of the Chinese Society of Aeronautics and Astronautics, announced the opening of the competition and delivered a speech. He pointed out that the development of new quality productive forces is of strategic significance to promote Chinese modernization, and IUSC is an important initiative to actively promote the generation of new quality productive forces by intelligent unmanned system technology. It is hoped that the competition will further unite the advantageous strengths of industry associations, colleges and universities, local governments and first-class enterprises to create a new ecology and a new paradigm of technological innovation and application in the field of unmanned swarm.

Zhao Guohong, deputy supervisor of the Chinese Institute of Command and Control, pointed out in his speech that the development and application of intelligent unmanned swarm technology requires the deep integration of industry, academia and research as well as the construction of a complete innovation chain from basic theories, key technologies to application scenarios and industrial applications. It is hoped that the competition will continue to stimulate major innovations and breakthroughs in the field of unmanned swarms that are truly capability-oriented and application-oriented.

Lyu Weifeng, vice president of Beihang University, pointed out in his speech that unmanned swarm technology is of great scientific value and strategic significance, and has a broad prospect for industrial application. It is hoped that a brighter future for unmanned swarm technology and industry can be created on the platform of IUSC by promoting research, application and education through competitions.

Wang Bo, vice president of Beijing Institute of Technology, said in his speech that unmanned swarm, as a cutting-edge interdisciplinary field integrating artificial intelligence and unmanned systems, is not only a frontier of research in academia, but also a focus of attention in the industrial sector, and a typical representative of the new quality productive forces.

Liu Daxiang, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and professor of Beihang University, congratulated the opening of the competition via video. He affirmed the driving effect of the competition on the development of intelligent swarm technology, and put forward the expectation of planning and building a first-class swarm technology platform to promote the innovation and development of the field of swarming based on the advantages of multi-disciplines.

Wang Haifeng and Jiao Zongxia, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, randomly selected the competition environment setup programme on the spot, with a view to fully assess the comprehensive ability of unmanned swarms to cope with unknown complex environments.

Yang Zhaohui, deputy secretary of the party committee of Luancheng District of Shijiazhuang City in north China’s Hebei Province, said that the District will focus on cultivating the drone industry as an important element of the advanced equipment manufacturing industry, attaches great importance to this event, and will actively support and host activities related to the competition.

The International Unmanned System Swarm Technology Competition (IUSC) is jointly organized by Chinese Society of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Chinese Institute of Command and Control, Beihang University, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and Beijing Institute of Technology, which aims at promoting the development of unmanned swarm technology by setting up a challenging competition task with clear mission objectives and great application values.

This year’s competition has attracted a lot of attention from experts, scholars and industry elites in the field of unmanned aircraft at home and abroad, with a total of 56 teams from universities, institutes and enterprises formally applying for the competition, such as Peking University, Beihang University, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing Information Science and Technology University, Harbin Institute of Technology, East China Jiaotong University, Naval Aeronautical University, Liaoning University of Technology, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Nankai University, Sichuan University, AVIC Xi’an Flight Automatic Control Research Institute, Aviation System Engineering Institute of China, Xi’an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics of CAS, China Aviation Industry Corporation Xi'an Automatic Control Research Institute, and China Aviation Systems Engineering Research Institute, among which 24 teams competed for the Grand Prize on the spot.

The event will last until July 22. In order to encourage continuous research and technological innovation, the competition has set up the IUSC Grand Prize and a series of individual technological breakthrough awards, ranking awards, etc., with a total prize money of more than RMB 700,000 yuan.
