From November 25 to 26, the finals of the 2024 Zhongguancun Biomimetic Robotics Competition was held at the Exhibition Center of Zhongguancun National Independent Innovation Demonstration Zone in Haidian District, Beijing. Beihang University’s Bioflight and Biomimetic Aircraft Team from the School of Transportation Science and Engineering, consisting of Instructors Wu Jianghao and Zhang Yanlai, and PhD students Cheng Cheng, Sheng Shijie, and Yao Hui, secured Innovation Excellence Award in the “Other Biomimetic Robots” category. Their biomimetic aircraft was ranked first among all competing devices.
The 2024 Zhongguancun Biomimetic Robot Competition is the first competition dedicated to biomimetic robots in China. It was jointly guided by the First Department of Equipment Industry of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology, Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform, Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, Administrative Commission of Zhongguancun Science Park, and Haidian District People’s Government of Beijing Municipality, and organized by the Administrative Commission of Zhongguancun Science City.
The competition solicited outstanding innovative teams of biomimetic robots from around the world, attracting a total of 101 teams to participate in more than 160 events. These teams were divided into four major tracks: Humanoid Biomimetic Robots, Multi-legged Biomimetic Robots, Embodied AI Models, and Other Biomimetic Robots. Finally, over 30 outstanding teams and enterprises advanced to the Finals.
In the Finals, Beihang’s team showcased the hummingbird-like aircraft BH-Fly to perform three flight tasks, including repeated vertical takeoffs and landings, flying and agile maneuvers in confined spaces, and simulated forest collision-resistance flights. The team achieved full marks in all three tasks. Their innovative work received coverage from major media, including CCTV News and CCTV Finance.
