Hangzhou International Innovation Institute of Beihang University

In order to promote the integrated development of education, science and technology, and human resources, accelerate the building of a leading country in education, science and technology, and quality workforce, facilitate the high-quality development of regional economy, and support the "Double First-Class Initiative," Beihang University and the Hangzhou Municipal People's Government established Hangzhou International Innovation Institute of Beihang University (hereinafter referred to as H3I), which will support Beihang University in carrying out high-level international education and other related tasks in Hangzhou.

Guided by the Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, H3I is committed to its positioning of "high standard, innovative mechanism, and international cooperation." It is making strategic efforts to develop Beihang University's peak and advantageous disciplines, construct high-level scientific research platforms, implement a "1+N" model of international cooperative education to train various types of top-notch innovative professionals, establish, with high standards, a demonstration hub for the training of international outstanding engineers, and transform the Hangzhou International Campus of Beihang University into a world-class, domestically-leading international education demonstration area with Zhejiang characteristics and Beihang University style. This will contribute the strength of H3I to developing a world-class university with Chinese characteristics, supporting Zhejiang to lead the way in common prosperity with Chinese characteristics and provincial modernization, building a strong province and leading country in education, advancing Chinese modernization, and achieving the Second Centenary Goal.

Study

H3I adopts the "1+N" model of international cooperative education, with France as a key partner to drive global cooperation. H3I continuously engages with first-class universities and scientific research institutions from France and worldwide to build a multi-dimensional network of partners and an international platform for scientific and educational innovation. This is aimed at developing first-class undergraduate and postgraduate education.

Zhongfa Aviation Institute of Beihang University (ZFAI), Beihang INSA Institute for Applied Sustainable Sciences and Technology, the International Education Center, Beihang Brazil Center, and the Regional Centre for Space Science and Technology Education in Asia and the Pacific (China) (Affiliated to the United Nations) have been established. Beihang Valencia Polytechnic Institute (tentative name) and others are set to be established soon. The "1+N" model of international cooperative education has initially taken shape.

H3I is also committed to high-quality postgraduate education and has established a comprehensive system for undergraduate, master's, and doctoral education. H3I will further expand its enrollment scale. By 2030, it is expected to have 3,000 undergraduate students and 7,000 postgraduate students, bringing the total student population to 10,000, of which 30% will be international students.

Faculty

H3I adheres to the talent-driven development approach. Leveraging high-standard scientific research platforms and high-level sino-foreign cooperative education, H3I adopts a new mechanism of "probation-evaluation-tenure" and a "pre-tenure to tenure" system, attracting first-class faculty staff from around the world.

In May 2025, Professor George Parisi, the winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics (2021), joined H3I. In addition, H3I has recruited a number of world-leading scholars as full-time faculty members, including Professor Yan Yong, a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in the UK, and Professor Zhang Yicheng, a member of the Academia Europaea.

By October 2025, the total number of faculty and staff had reached 717. This includes 356 full-time faculty members (with 155 dispatched by Beihang University). Among them, there are 24 national leading talents and 41 national young top-notch talents. The proportion of national talents among full-time faculty is 20.5%. More than 50 foreign faculty work at H3I, accounting for 15% of full-time faculty.

Research

Guided by the construction of high-level platforms, H3I promotes the coordinated development of high-level research and education. H3I has established several innovation centers led by a Nobel Prize winner and academicians from developed countries. The total number of platforms has reached 20, including the National Key Laboratory of Spintronics/Micro-nano Science and Analysis Innovation Center, State Key Laboratory of Bioinspired Interfacial Materials Science/Bioinspired Science Innovation Center, etc. In addition, Asia Simulation Federation, the first international organization initiated by Beihang University, has been launched at the Hangzhou International Campus of Beihang University.

H3I has published more than 100 papers, including articles in top-tier journals such as Science and Nature's sub journals. H3I has won more than ten awards at or above the provincial and ministerial level, including the gold award at the Macao International Innovation and Invention Expo. H3I has been approved to undertake projects supported by the Civil Aviation Joint Research Fund of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Guiding Funds of the Central Government for Local Science and Technology Development, the National Key R&D Program, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

H3I is active in commercializing scientific research achievements and is collaborating with Yuhang District to develop an innovation ecosystem circle surrounding the campus. It will implement eight special actions to build an ecosystem that integrates three circles. With aerospace technology as the core, H3I will focus on the two major fields: low-altitude manufacturing and aerospace information. It will explore the formation of industrial clusters in advanced aviation materials and other industrial scenarios. H3I is committed to becoming a source of original innovation, a preferred destination for technology transfer, and a magnet for innovative people, thereby supporting regional economic and social development.

International Cooperation

Responding to the national strategic call, H3I coordinates "bringing in" and "going out" initiatives. It has established a diversified and multi-dimensional network of international cooperation, held multiple high-level academic conferences, summer schools and other events, actively promoting the opening-up of education to the outside world.

Foreign experts from H3I have received multiple awards from the Chinese government. Academician Gérard Creuzet, Co-Chair of the Beihang-Europe Cooperation Committee, won the 2024 Chinese Government Friendship Award, the highest honor by China for foreign experts. Frédéric Genty, the French Dean of ZFAI, was invited to attend the reception for foreign experts celebrating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Associate Professor Sylvain Eimer, a foreign faculty at H3I, was honored with the title of "Hangzhou Foreign Expert Qianjiang Friendship Ambassador" in 2024.
