School of Artificial Intelligence
(Institute of Artificial Intelligence)

Beihang University is one of China's pioneering institutions in artificial intelligence research, leading globally in areas such as collective software development and refined intelligence. The School of Artificial Intelligence (Institute of Artificial Intelligence) operates under the principle of teamwork and coordination to achieve common goals. It targets the international academic forefront and key national needs, leveraging Beihang University's strengths and major projects for collaborative research.

Study

Beihang University, as the initiating institution, led the establishment and was among the first approved by the Ministry of Education for an undergraduate program in artificial intelligence. It was also one of the first to set up an interdisciplinary AI degree authorization point, pioneering a comprehensive undergraduate-to-doctoral AI education system. The School, recognized for its "AI High-Level Talent Training Program for National Urgent Needs" and its AI discipline as a Beijing Advanced Discipline, focuses on analyzing and constructing complex systems, emphasizing a holistic approach that integrates foundational knowledge, practical skills, and interdisciplinary learning. It is dedicated to cultivating top-tier AI scientists and engineers, breaking traditional disciplinary boundaries, integrating diverse academic resources, and reinforcing core scientific competencies. It aims to cultivate students capable of addressing fundamental AI challenges and prepare them to be future pioneers and innovators in the field. The School admits approximately 80 undergraduates and 170 postgraduates annually.

The School has established a comprehensive talent development and research model, aiming to advance core AI theories, address critical technical challenges, and develop major AI application platforms, creating a multidisciplinary center of excellence in education and research. The School encompasses several specialized centers, including the Mathematics and Fundamental AI Theory Center, the Intelligence Perception and Cognition Research Center, the Intelligence Detection and Cooperative Control Research Center, and the Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Future Blockchain and Privacy Computing, all committed to advancing aerospace technology and spearheading innovations in information science.

Faculty

The faculty consists of 53 members, led by distinguished academic authorities, including members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and supported by a balanced team of seasoned experts and promising young scholars. This includes one academician, four national leading talents, and twelve national young talents.

Research

The School is dedicated to cutting-edge original research and addresses key national priorities by tackling technical challenges and promoting industry applications. It has achieved internationally recognized results in areas such as advanced perception in complex environments, collective intelligence coordination, neuroscience-inspired AI, and systems integration. The School has also driven innovation and real-world application in domains like intelligence transportation, security, and inspection systems, promoting the cross-innovation and application of the latest artificial intelligence technologies. Its research accomplishments include one First Prize and three Second Prizes of the State Technological Invention Award, and numerous provincial and ministerial awards.

To support national strategies, the School has established a strategic AI research platform, leading to the successful approval of the "Image and Video Understanding in Complex Scenarios," a National AI Industry-Education Integration Innovation Platform, marking a milestone in the construction of a national high-level platform. The School manages one national research platform, three key laboratories under the Ministry of Education and Industry, and one advanced research center in Beijing. It has formed partnerships with leading entities such as the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation, Huawei, and Baidu to foster industry-academic collaboration and advance AI technologies.

International Cooperation

The School actively engages in global academic exchange, obtaining approval for the Ministry of Science and Technology's "High-end Foreign Experts Recruitment Program" and for the Beijing Association for Science and Technology's project to support Beijing as a center for international science and technology innovation. It hosts academic events such as the "International Conference on Evolutionary Game Theory and Artificial Intelligence." Students are encouraged to gain global exposure through exchange programs, international summer schools, professional competitions, and cultural activities.
