School of Computer Science and Engineering

The School of Computer Science and Engineering at Beihang University traces its origins back to 1958, when it was founded as the university's Numerical Computing Center. It formally became the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in 1978 and was restructured into the the School of Computer Science and Engineering in 2002. The School has consistently led computer science education and research fields in China, producing a steady stream of experts in the discipline. In 1998, Computer Science and Technology was designated a first-tier national discipline. In the 2006 education evaluation by the Ministry of Education, it ranked third among first-level disciplines in Computer Science. In 2007, it became one of the first institutions to receive recognition as a national key discipline in Computer Science. In 2011, Software Engineering was also recognized as a first-tier national discipline. During the 2012 national evaluation, both Computer Science and Technology and Software Engineering ranked 4th nationwide. In the 2017 assessment, Computer Science and Technology received an A rating, while Software Engineering earned an A+ rating. Both disciplines were selected as part of the "Double First-Class" initiative in 2017 and achieved notable success in the fifth round of education evaluation, with the Computer Science discipline ranking in the top 0.1% globally according to the ESI.

Study

The School prioritizes a broad-based education and elite training, establishing a nationally leading and globally recognized engineering education system, and has achieved professional accreditation twice. With a focus on challenging engineering problems, the School has implemented a rigorous curriculum aligned with global standards, featuring a comprehensive online experimental platform. Students have excelled in national and international innovation competitions, and the School has consistently produced highly sought-after graduates. The School leverages its research strengths to enhance its teaching, with all laboratories accessible to undergraduates, fostering a robust technological practice system aimed at developing innovative and critical thinking. The School boasts one national-level first-class undergraduate program, the first national-level teaching experiment demonstration center and virtual simulation center, one national-level teaching team, three national exemplary courses, two Beijing-level teaching teams, three Beijing exemplary courses, six Beijing teaching masters, and has been awarded two first prizes and four second prizes for national teaching achievements.

Faculty

The School is home to a dynamic community of 154 faculty members, including 59 full professors and 61 associate professors. The School boasts a distinguished faculty led by six academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. It includes scholars selected for national talent programs such as the "Leading Talent Program" and the "Young Talent Program." It has cultivated a vibrant academic environment where numerous faculty have received top national and provincial awards, and where recognized experts and rising scholars are actively shaping the future of computing and engineering.

Research

The School boasts two national key laboratories, one national engineering laboratory, one national engineering technology research center, one national-level international collaboration base, one national-level experimental teaching demonstration center, six provincial and ministerial key laboratories, and one advanced innovation center. The strong research foundation has cultivated two leading academic fields: Computer Science and Intelligent Technology, and Data Science and Software Engineering, alongside several specialized interdisciplinary research areas. The School has earned one second prize in the National Natural Science Award, two first prizes in the National Scientific and Technological Progress Award, and 12 second prizes in the National Scientific and Technological Progress Award.

International Cooperation

The School is consistently ranked among the top in China and has made significant strides in internationalization. According to the latest ShanghaiRanking, the School is ranked 18th globally in the field of computer science. It plays a significant role in advancing global academic discourse through the Frontiers of Computer Science (FCS), a leading journal it established and continues to manage. In 2022, FCS was recognized as a Class B journal by the China Computer Federation, with its academic impact continuing to rise. The School is also home to two international research platforms: W3C China and the OW2 (Octa) Open Source Software International Alliance, both of which play vital roles in promoting open standards and global collaboration. It maintains strong partnerships with leading institutions around the world, including the Technical University of Madrid, National University of Singapore (NUS), Technical University of Munich, Nanyang Technological University, and the Hasso Plattner Institute, among others. Since 2014, the School has collaborated with the Technical University of Madrid to offer a dual master's degree program in Software Engineering, in which over ten students have participated. In addition, the School launched the Beihang–NUS Joint Undergraduate Program to attract top international talents. Many students have already been admitted to this selective program under formal bilateral agreements.
