The School of Computer Science and Engineering at Beihang University traces its origins back to 1958, when it was founded as the university's Numerical Computing Center. It formally became the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in 1978 and was restructured into the the School of Computer Science and Engineering in 2002. The School has consistently led computer science education and research fields in China, producing a steady stream of experts in the discipline. In 1998, Computer Science and Technology was designated a first-tier national discipline. In the 2006 education evaluation by the Ministry of Education, it ranked third among first-level disciplines in Computer Science. In 2007, it became one of the first institutions to receive recognition as a national key discipline in Computer Science. In 2011, Software Engineering was also recognized as a first-tier national discipline. During the 2012 national evaluation, both Computer Science and Technology and Software Engineering ranked 4th nationwide. In the 2017 assessment, Computer Science and Technology received an A rating, while Software Engineering earned an A+ rating. Both disciplines were selected as part of the "Double First-Class" initiative in 2017 and achieved notable success in the fifth round of education evaluation, with the Computer Science discipline ranking in the top 0.1% globally according to the ESI.
