School of Engineering Medicine

In 2020, the School of Engineering Medicine was established with a focus on engineering medicine. Supported by the basic medicine discipline featuring "Beihang's aerospace characteristics, quantification, and intelligence," it aims to cultivate "Medicine-Engineering+" composite engineering medicine leading talents with "solid general knowledge, broad perspectives, and multidisciplinary integration" through the cross-integration of new medicine and new engineering. Relying on the national top discipline of "Biomedical Engineering" and basic medicine disciplines, the School offers two undergraduate programs: Intelligent Medical Engineering and Sports Rehabilitation.

Study

The Biomedical Engineering and Medicine Sciences programs at Beihang University focus on addressing major national strategic needs and global scientific frontiers. These programs aim to cultivate interdisciplinary and versatile talents with "medical-engineering integration capabilities." Each year, the School enrolls approximately 100 undergraduate students, 160 master's students, and 110 doctoral students. A comprehensive set of high-quality foundational and core professional courses, such as Advanced Biomechanics, Biomaterials, and Biomedical Imaging, are offered to meet the educational demands. Over the past five years, more than ten professional textbooks have been published, including three recognized at provincial/ministerial level. The School has received one First prize of the National Teaching Award and two Grand Prizes of the Beijing Teaching Achievement Award.

Faculty

The School has built a first-class faculty team represented by academicians and fellows of international academic organizations, members of the State Council's Discipline Appraisal Group and the Teaching Steering Committee, national high-level talents, the president of the Biomedical Engineering Society and overseas high-level talents. Currently, there are 65 full-time faculty members, over 78% of whom have senior professional titles, 100% have doctoral degrees, and over 90% have overseas experiences.

Research

Guided by Beihang University's "superior medical-engineering" strategy, the Medical Engineering & Engineering Medicine(MEM)of Beihang University focuses on medicine and health, forming distinctive strengths in the following areas:

1. Next-generation biomaterials and implant/interventional technologies: This includes active, intelligent, and biodegradable biomaterials; design, evaluation, and manufacturing of implantable and interventional medical devices; and tissue repair and regeneration.

2. Next-generation therapeutic technologies and equipment: This includes medical surgical robots, medical virtual reality, intelligent rehabilitation and elderly-care equipment, and life-support technologies and systems such as ECMO and ventilators.

3. Next-generation imaging and diagnostic technologies and equipment: This includes multimodal magnetic nanomolecular imaging, infrared imaging, label-free Raman molecular imaging, and novel sensing and medical chip technologies.

The MEM has achieved a series of original breakthroughs, facilitated technology transfers, incubated innovative enterprises, and cultivated top-tier talents. It has also made outstanding contributions to national strategic planning, consultation on medical equipment and devices, and the compilation of major science and technology plan guidelines. Additionally, significant achievements have been made in the fields of aerospace life support and human injury protection in extreme environments.

International Cooperation

The School has fully implemented the "UPS" Initiative, establishing a comprehensive, multi-tiered, and broad-based framework for international collaboration. It has established the "111" Base in biomechanics and mechanobiology, jointly supported by the Ministry of Education and the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, as well as the International Joint Research Center for Aerospace Biotechnology and Medical Engineering of the Ministry of Science and Technology. Additionally, three Beijing international cooperation bases have been set up in the areas of implantable medical devices, biomaterials and nerve regeneration, and Sino-Russian biotechnology and medical engineering. The School maintains close cooperative relationships with world-class biomedical engineering schools. Beihang MEM was the first to establish an International Advisory Committee (AC) and has conducted four AC evaluations. Two international journals in the fields of medical equipment and emerging medical technologies have been launched: Medicine in Novel Technology and Devices (co-published with Elsevier, listed in the 2022 Excellent Action Plan for Chinese Science and Technology Journals and ESCI) and Visual Computing for Industry, Biomedicine and Art (indexed in over 20 databases, including ESCI and EI). The MEM has also participated in the construction of the National Clinical Research Center for Radiotherapy and Interventional Therapy and the National Basic Science Center for Complex Systems in Pan-vascular Intervention.
