School of Instrumentation and Optoelectronic Engineering

The School of Instrumentation and Optoelectronic Engineering at Beihang University can trace its origins back to the Aircraft Equipment Research Office established in 1952 when Beihang University (then known as Beijing Institute of Aeronautics) was founded. The discipline of Aviation Gyro and Inertial Navigation was granted the first national doctoral program in 1981 and one of the first national key disciplines in 1988, and was renamed "Precision Instrument and Machinery" in 1997.

In 2003, the School of Instrumentation and Optoelectronic Engineering was officially established in accordance with the university's plan of establishing schools based on first-level disciplines. It was a merger of the Measurement & Control and Information Technology Department from the School of Automation, the Aerospace Navigation and Control Department from the School of Astronautics, and the Institute of Optoelectronics Technology from the School of Astronautics.

Study

The School boasts two first-level disciplines for doctoral programs: Instrumentation Science and Technology and Optical Engineering. Among them, the discipline of Instrument Science and Technology was recognized as one of the first national first-class key disciplines in 2007, designated as a key discipline by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in 2012, and ranked first nationally in the 2012 Ministry of Education first-class discipline evaluation. In 2017, it was included in the "Double First-Class" initiative. Currently, it encompasses secondary disciplines such as the State Key Discipline of Precision Instruments and Machinery, the State Key Discipline of Measurement Testing Technology and Instruments, and the discipline of Remote Sensing Science and Technology. The Optical Engineering discipline was approved as a doctoral program in 2005. It was subsequently designated a Beijing Key First-Class Discipline in 2008 and has now been included in the "Double First-Class" initiative for Instrument Science and Technology.

In the process of talent cultivation, it emphasizes the integration of a broad spectrum with distinctive characteristics. The School features five professional directions: Measurement & Control Technology and Instruments, Detection & Navigation and Control Technology, Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering, Remote Sensing Science and Technology, and Intelligent Perception Engineering. Among these, Measurement & Control Technology and Instruments is recognized as a national first-class program, a characteristic program by the Ministry of Education, and an outstanding engineering pilot program. Detection & Navigation and Control Technology is a national first-class program and a key program by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering is a first-class program in Beijing. The School currently offers one national excellent course, three municipal excellent courses, one excellent video open course by the Ministry of Education, and one video resource sharing course by the Ministry of Education. It has established the National Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center for Aeronautical Science and Technology and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology Experimental Demonstration Teaching Center for Instrument Optoelectronics and Reliability.

Faculty

The School boasts a top-notch faculty. Currently, it has a total of 257 faculty and staff members, including 193 full-time teachers. Among them, three are academicians, 22 are in national-level talent programs, 19 are in Young Talent Program, and two have been honored with the title of Distinguished Teachers.

The School comprises five departments, one institute, one research center and one teaching center, namely the Department of Measurement & Control and Information Technology, the Department of Precision Instrumentation, Navigation & Control, the Department of Optoelectronic Engineering, the Department of Remote Sensing Science and Technology, the Department of Intelligent Perception Engineering, the Institute of Optoelectronics Technology, the Institute of Large-scale Scientific Facility and Centre for Zero Magnetic Field Science, and the Teaching & Experiment Center.

Research

The School possesses state-of-the-art bases and platforms. It is currently in the process of constructing the Ultrasensitive Measurement of Ultra-weak Magnetic Field and Inertial Rotation, which will be the world's only and most advanced "zero-magnetic" space, providing an environment and measurement means for extreme weak magnetic fields.

The School has also made significant contributions by undertaking major projects. These projects cover areas such as advanced inertial devices and systems, precision opto-mechatronic testing, spacecraft attitude measurement and control, and advanced sensing technology, resulting in a series of major achievements.

International Cooperation

The School maintains close international cooperation, fostering collaborative initiatives and establishing several key international partnerships. The School has established stable cooperative relationships with experts from renowned international institutions in countries such as the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, Singapore, Australia, and South Korea. It conducts long-term joint degree programs with Politecnico di Milano in Italy, and regularly organizes summer camps in the UK for outstanding undergraduate students. These extensive and in-depth international exchanges and collaboration not only contribute to the rapid development of the School but also enhance its internationalization, thereby elevating its capabilities to serve the socio-economic needs and increasing its competitiveness on the global stage.

Looking ahead, the School will continue to leverage its strengths, cultivate top-notch talents, make outstanding contributions, and actively stride towards the goal of building a world-class institution.
