School of Materials Science and Engineering

The School of Materials Science and Engineering at Beihang University traces its origins to the Department of Aeronautical Metallurgy established in 1954, with its current academic structure formally established in 2001. The School's main facility, Building No. 1 at Shahe Campus, covers an area of approximately 15,000 square meters. The School is composed of the Department of Materials Science, Department of Materials Physics, Department of Materials Chemistry, Department of Polymer and Composite Materials, Department of Materials Processing, Advanced Materials Research Center, Additive Manufacturing Center, and the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Materials Science and Engineering. It holds a first-tier discipline doctoral program in Materials Science and Engineering, which was designated as one of China's inaugural first-tier key disciplines. In 2017 and 2022, the discipline was consecutively selected for the national "Double First-Class" initiative and consistently received A+ ratings in the Ministry of Education's discipline evaluations. The discipline achieved global recognition in 2019 by entering the top 1‰ in the ESI international rankings. Both the "Materials Science and Engineering" and "Nanomaterials and Technology" programs have been accredited as national first-class undergraduate major construction sites.

Study

The School focuses on aerospace as its primary domain, pioneering a sustainable education reform model centered on "solid foundational knowledge," "enhanced practical training, " "innovation cultivation, " and "global perspective expansion, " with remarkable achievements in cultivating distinguished faculty, developing exemplary courses, creating authoritative textbooks, and generating impactful pedagogical outcomes. It currently maintains two outstanding Beijing undergraduate education teams and three municipal-level teaching masters, having received one national-level second prize and three Beijing first prizes for teaching achievements, along with six nationally outstanding doctoral dissertations (including nominations). The School has established the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Materials Science and Engineering, and collaboratively built over ten teaching internship bases with aviation industry leaders including AVIC, China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, and China Aerospace Science & Industry Corporation. Notable student achievements include the national "Challenge Cup" grand prize and the first gold medal in the inaugural National Graduate Metallographic Experiment Analysis Competition, representing exceptional scientific innovation accomplishments.

Faculty

The School's academic excellence is anchored by its distinguished faculty team, adhering to the principle that talent constitutes the primary resource. Its faculty roster includes six academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, 18 national leading talents, and 25 national young talents. The current academic staff comprises 71 professors (research fellows) and 71 associate professors (associate research fellows), supported by 82 doctoral supervisors. The institution has cultivated several elite research collectives: the "Metal Smart Materials for Extreme Service Environments" and "Novel Magnetic Functional Materials" NSFC Innovative Research Groups; the "High-performance Non-equilibrium Materials Science and Technology" and "Laser Processing and Forming of High-performance Metallic Materials" MOE Innovation Teams; the "Advanced High-temperature Materials and Coating Technologies" National Defense Technology Innovation Team; and the "Additive Manufacturing" MOST Key Area Innovation Team.

Research

The School demonstrates steadfast commitment to national strategic priorities, aligning its research endeavors with critical state demands and global academic frontiers. It has established seven national-level platforms including the National Key Laboratory of Materials Intelligent Design and the National Engineering Laboratory for Large Metallic Component Additive Manufacturing, complemented by nine provincial/ministerial laboratories such as the Key Laboratory of Aerospace Advanced Materials and Service Technology (MOE) and the Key Laboratory of High-temperature Structural Materials & Coating Technologies (MIIT). In recent years, the School has led over 40 national key research initiatives with annual research expenditure averaging 380 million CNY. Its scientific achievements have been recognized with over 20 prestigious awards, including three first-class and two second-class National Technology Invention Awards, one National Natural Science Second Prize, one National Scientific and Technological Progress Second Prize, and over ten provincial/ministerial first prizes. Fundamental research breakthroughs have led to numerous high-impact publications, including 14 in Science and 4 in Nature, demonstrating significant contributions to cutting-edge materials science.

International Cooperation

The School makes full use of the "Aerospace Advanced Materials" International Talent Introduction Base and the "Advanced Materials" International Cooperation Base (supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology) to further advance its internationalization strategy. It actively promotes international collaboration and exchanges among faculty and students while establishing and refining assessment mechanisms for such initiatives. Additionally, the School strengthens the internationalization of its faculty, enhances global cooperation in talent development and scientific research, continuously expands the discipline's international influence, and establishes an international evaluation system.
