School of Reliability and Systems Engineering

In 1985, Professor Yang Weimin, a renowned expert in China's defense technology and education sectors and the founder of reliability systems engineering, established the Department of Systems Engineering and the Research Institute of Reliability Engineering at Beihang University in response to major national stratigic needs. In 2010, the Department of Systems Engineering was renamed the School of Reliability and Systems Engineering. Over nearly 40 years of development, the School has fostered a culture with the "Weimin Spirit" as its core. Adhering to the concept of "pioneering innovation, daring to be first, demand-driven development, professional advancement, discipline leadership, science and education coordination, team advantages, and collective development," it has forged a unique path of innovation characterized by "orienting toward engineering services, pioneering research areas, and creating a talent cultivation system." The School and the Research Institute have coordinated to build a reliability professional ecosystem that includes talent cultivation, scientific research, engineering applications, and social services, becoming a leading force in the field of reliability in China.

Study

The School undertakes the construction of the first-level discipline of Safety Science and Engineering at Beihang University. It offers doctoral programs in the first-level discipline of Safety Science and Engineering, the second-level discipline of Systems Engineering, and professional master's and doctoral degrees in Electronic Information and Mechanics. The School possesses two undergraduate programs: Aircraft Quality and Reliability (a national first-class undergraduate program) and Safety Engineering (a Beijing first-class undergraduate program). Currently, the School has 216 undergraduate students and 519 postgraduate students, including 311 master's and 208 doctoral students. It offers 78 undergraduate courses and 97 postgraduate courses.

Faculty

The School has a total of 108 full-time faculty members, including 36 full professors and 64 associate professors. Among them, there is one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, six national leading talents and eight national young talents.

The School adheres to the fundamental task of "moral education and talent cultivation," solidifying the "Four-Strengths" education model of "strong passion, strong foundation, strong practice, and strong integration." It aims to create an educational environment that is "trustworthy, lovable, respectable, and reliable." The School has established a national virtual simulation experimental teaching center and an experimental teaching demonstration center under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, along with more than 20 off-campus talent cultivation bases that cover key technological and national economic sectors. Additionally, it has initiated the establishment of a quality and reliability professional education alliance with the participation of more than 60 universities and enterprises. The School closely integrates theoretical research, engineering applications, and talent cultivation, training a large number of high-level professionals in the field of reliability, who has become a core force in industries such as aerospace, aviation, shipbuilding, and electronics. In 2023, the School led the team to win the second prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award.

Research

The School boasts a comprehensive range of research directions, a well-structured teaching and research team, and advanced experimental equipment. Centered on major demands, it engages in management support, talent cultivation, scientific research, and engineering services. Since the 9th Five-Year Plan period, the School has undertaken and completed over 500 scientific research projects, winning 144 awards for various scientific and technological achievements. It has led the charge in scientific research and won two second prizes for National Scientific and Technological Progress, one Provincial/Ministerial Technology Innovation Team Award, eight first prizes for Provincial/Ministerial Science and Technology Progress Awards, first prize of Scientific and Technological Progress Award from the Ministry of Education, and first prize of Technological Invention Award from the Machinery Industry, among others. The School has also participated in projects that were awarded two special prizes of the National Scientific and Technological Progress Award, making outstanding contributions, and achieving significant social and economic benefits.

The School hosts several national-level centers and expert groups focused on management consulting and technical services. It has led the establishment of the State Key Laboratory of Reliability and Environmental Engineering Technology, co-founded the State Key Laboratory of Advanced Forming Technology and Equipment, and the Innovation Center for Component Application Verification Technology. The School also possesses seven provincial and ministerial-level key laboratories and evaluation institutions.

International Cooperation

Aligned with national strategies and the goal of building a world-class university, the School adheres to the principle of "Global Vision, Reliable Committment" to strengthen the international dimensions of talent cultivation and scientific research. Embracing openness as a catalyst for growth, it has established a comprehensive, multi-tiered, and proactive framework for international collaboration.

The School has actively fostered partnerships with top-tier universities worldwide, enhancing its openness, integration, and internationalization. In 2016 and 2020, the School signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with Rutgers University (USA) and Université Paris-Saclay (France), respectively, launching joint international summer-school programs. More than one hundred students specializing in reliability engineering have participated, significantly elevating the School's educational quality and global competitiveness.

For years, the School has focused on cutting-edge research in foundational technologies and has regularly invited distinguished international scholars for academic exchanges. Through its three-pillar strategy—cultivating globally competitive talent, fostering a world-class faculty, and strengthening international partnerships—the School engages in multidimensional collaboration with elite teams worldwide, driving its ascent to new heights internationally.

The new era bestows new missions, and the new journey calls for new endeavors. The School and the Institute will seize opportunities, explore and innovate, and move forward bravely to make new contributions to building China into a global leader in quality, education, science and technology, and talent.
